The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded South Australia. Unusual for its time, it was planted solely to Shiraz. The ancient 500 million year-old soils on the vineyard are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay resulting in low yields from the nearly 95-year-old dry-grown ungrafted vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952, it became recognised as one of Australia's greatest shiraz wines. Edelstone 2001 is very deep crimson in colour. Sweet and spicy, perfumed plums and black berry fruits with hints of anise, vanilla, tar and nuances of mint and white pepper. A luscious, fleshy, complex, textured palate with great depth and structure finishing with long silky tannins.
"The magnificent 201 Mount Edelstone (100% Eden Valley Shiraz) boasts a dense purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blackberry liqueur, white flowers, and toasty, subtle wood. Underbrush, pepper, and licorice also make an appearance. With great intensity, a multilayered, opulent personality, and plenty of structure, tannin, fruit and extract, this beauty should be cellared for 2-3 years, and drunk over the following 10-15."
