Bin 389 and other wines in the Penfolds Bin-range 'family' of red wines - 28, 128 and 707 - were the result of Max Schubert's constant experimentation during the 1950s and 1960s. Bin 389 combines the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz and demonstrates the traditional Penfolds' trademark - balance between fruit and oak, in a wine with rich varietal characters and medium to long-term cellaring potential. This wine is deep red, and with a nose of ripe red and blackcurrant, chocolaty, licquorice aromas with a strong element of mocha, malt oak. It has a flowing, supple palate with plenty of ripe, developing black fruit, chocolaty flavours, fresh new oak and savoury tannins. It finishes firm and gritty but there is plenty of fruit that follows through.

Tasted in London in Nov 2012 as part of a Penfolds portfolio tasting. The 2009 Bin 389 is a dense purple colour in the glass. It has a lovely lifted nose of plummy fruit with eucalytus and hints of iodine. There are obvious and grainy tannins supporting the palate, which has a great 'earthy' character to it. This is dense and chewy wine which is built for the long haul. Put it away for a decade. 93 points.
Bin 389 - part of an amazing Penfolds portfolio tasting.
